We are pleased to introduce you to our first Boston Terrier. Miss Deja Rose an off coloured, non-recognized, disqualifying colour- Red and White Registered Boston. We owe so much to this little lady and wanted to share her story.
Like most people we set out to find our first Boston Terrier unaware of the breed standard or exactly how to recognize a good breeder from those who should be banned from ever owning a dog. We set up an appointment to go see a beautiful litter of black and white puppies with a breeder we found here in Saskatchewan.
Upon arriving at the farm we found ourselves shocked by the conditions... not exactly what we had seen in the photos online and the smell could never possibly be properly described.... but after making the long trip we decided to continue on and meet with the breeders and the puppies we had fallen in love with online.
When we entered the "kennel" to see the puppies we walked passed a very frail, sickly, looking bitch trembling in the back of a kennel, my heart stopped... We followed the breeder to the next kennel where we saw the puppies we had come for. Silly, overly excited, dirty little boys and girls who had stolen my heart online, but now that we were there, someone else was on my mind.
After a quick play with the puppies and a look into my husband’s eyes I asked the breeder about the little bitch in the kennel beside the puppies, I was told some very unsettling things about her and how if I wanted her to take her, they had no use for her. This is the PG13 version of what was said...
No questions asked, no thinking it over, she was coming home with us. We opened her kennel door greeted her slowly, her entire body trembled with fear but the look in her eyes was of sheer love and gratitude we picked her up and ran not walked out of the kennel and off the farm as quickly as we could.
The next day by we had her into the e-vets, her stomach was hard and extended however every other bone on her body was jetting out we thought she may have had worms and looked as if she had not eaten in weeks. She refused any food and wouldn't move, not even to go to the bathroom, where she was laying is where she would elevate herself. We were shocked by what the vet had to tell us.... She was pregnant there were puppies inside her and they were stuck, she needed an emergency C-Section, and even with one there was no guarantee she would make it. We agreed to the surgery and also requested she be spayed at the time of surgery...
After the surgery we were told that the vet believed she had gone into labour days before we had saved her. That she was not able to deliver the puppies as they were too large for her to pass, all puppies were dead, and she too would have been within hours if we had not saved her.
Deja spent the next several days at the vet’s receiving various IVs, special diets, and other round the clock care. She would make it but it was going to be a long rocky road.
The next weeks and months were full of heart aches and triumphs...
We were very lucky as she immediately trusted and loved us, however we believe she had never been in a house before, never needed to ask to use the washroom, was never put on a leash or in a car or well anything other than living in a box and ignored, and we had never dealt with such a situation either. Months of regular care, patience and well let’s face it blood sweat and tears. Then finally we started to see a change she became my daughters best friend, my husband’s napping partner and my saviour after an accident that nearly cost me my life.
Deja is now 7 as of 2012 and is an active member of our home, and grooming salon. Looking at her now you would have never guessed she came to us in such a way. We love her to pieces and have in turn found a passion within the breed, they are truly amazing animals.
As of summer 2009 the "Boston Breeder/Mill" has been shut down and is no longer in operation!!!
